Biography

Aloha Everyone!

My name is Ruth Iverson and I currently live in Davis, CA. I'm looking forward to this class, and to working with all of you! I enrolled in the Web Design Diploma here at AIO in September 2006 to help me hone the skills to fire up a new career, and I'm enjoying the challenge and flexibility of online learning. I have learned just as much from my classmates as from the course material and projects, and I expect that this class will be no exception.

I am currently engaged in part-time freelance web design and development in order to gain experience, build my portfolio, and earn a little money along the way... My portfolio site is not up yet, but I'm actively working on it and a version of some sort will hopefully be up before the end of this class, as I intend to start looking for full-time work in web development in the San Francisco Bay Area within the next month or so.

My goals for this course include:

The previous classes I have attended at AIO have provided me with a good foundation for a new career. I have learned a great deal about how to build interactive sites from the ground up, honed my research and analytical skills, filled in gaps in my (mostly self-taught) knowledge of web design as well as interactive multimedia and networking technologies, and had fun along the way. I'm just starting to delve into the interesting world of dynamic web sites and web apps, so I'm hoping this course will increase my knowledge there.

I have quite a bit of programming experience, having spent the years from 1984 to 1994 as a systems programmer on the UNIX operating system using the C language. I'm well-versed in (X)HTML, decent at CSS, have a little ActionScript experience learned from the AIO Animation class, and a smattering of JavaScript. I enjoyed learning the fundamentals of PHP and would like to continue exploring what it can do. In this class, I'm hoping to complete a fictitious commercial web site that I started in a previous class for my project and my portfolio.

I attempt to keep fit with a combo of swimming, bicycling, and weight training. I am also learning how to meditate in the Buddhist shamatha tradition. Whenever I get the chance, I love to spend quality time with friends & family in the San Francisco Bay Area. I also enjoy music, reading, writing, movies, blogging, interesting discussions, and occasionally running my youngest dog (I have three Shelties) in agility.
